The ELI has 8 levels of instruction for students from beginner to academic proficiency. Placement in a level is determined by the following:
1) DuoLingo English Test (DET) - Once ELI receives the application fee and a copy of the F-1 student visa, students receive a link to take the DET online. This test measures reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The results from this general English proficiency test allows ELI to plan a level that is appropriate for students' learning and English development. All new students must complete this test prior to their arrival at the ELI.
2) Michigan English Placement Test (Michigan EPT) & Writing Test - During orientation week at the ELI, students will take these tests which measure listening comprehension, grammatical knowledge, vocabulary range, reading comprehension, and writing. These are the official ELI placement tests, and all new students are required to take these tests.
