English Language Institute
Frequently Asked Questions
When do I apply for admission?
We recommend that you apply at least 30 days prior to the beginning date; this will allow you time to apply for a student visa. If there are special circumstances, we will be happy to work with you. Please contact us at eli@mercer.edu.
Do I need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)?
No, the TOEFL is not required for the ELI. The TOEFL is also not required for admission to most Mercer undergraduate programs if you successfully complete the ELI program.
How will I know what level I am in?
During orientation week, you will take a placement test to determine your level. The placement test consists of three sections: a written test that measures your reading, grammar, and vocabulary skills, a 30 minute timed writing sample, and a short oral interview with one of our teachers. Your score on the placement test will place you into one of six different levels of the program. You will be told your level placement on the first day of classes.
When will I know if I have been accepted?
The ELI tries to process every complete application within three to four days. We will send the acceptance packet by express courier.
From where do most students come?
Like Atlanta, the ELI has a very diverse student population. Most of our students come from Brazil, China, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Poland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Venezuela.
Do I need a car? can I take public transportation?
Our Atlanta campus is served by public transportation. ELI students are eligible to purchase discounted monthly passes that provide unlimited bus and train service on Atlanta's Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) system. However, most students prefer to purchase their own cars. The choice will be yours.
Can someone pick me up at the airport?
There are several shuttle services from the Atlanta airport. In addition, MARTA connects the Atlanta airport to other parts of the city by train. The cost for shuttle service varies from $25 to $75 depending on where you are going in the city. If you need transportation from the airport, please let us know at least one week in advance so that we can help you!
Can I purchase food or a meal plan on campus?
Yes, students can add any amount of money to their student identification card, which can be used for campus purchases, including food.
How much is health insurance?
If you do not have health insurance that can be used in the United States, you will automatically be enrolled in the Mercer Health Insurance Plan. The cost of this health insurance is a very reasonable $161 per session. You will find out more about your health insurance during your orientation.
